Jawai Leopard Safari: Cost, Timings, Zones and Stay (2026)
Sourabh Kumar
- October 16, 2026
Quick answer: Jawai is a rocky leopard landscape in Pali district, about 135 km from Udaipur and 160 km from Jodhpur. It is not a dense forest or a national park. In October 2026 I paid ₹5,500 for a tent that included breakfast and dinner, ₹6,500 for an evening safari jeep with a sunset high-tea, and ₹3,000 for a morning safari jeep.

ToggleKey Takeaways
- Expect granite hills, farmland and villages, not a dense forest like Ranthambore.
- Safaris are run by private operators in open jeeps, with no forest-department gate or ticket counter. Prices differ by operator, and in my experience the safaris felt unregulated.
- My operators ran the morning safari from 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM and the evening safari from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM.
- One night was enough for me. Two nights is the most I would plan.
- Weekends and long weekends cost more and fill up quickly, so book ahead.
What did I expect, and what did I actually find?
I expected Jawai to be a dense forest like Ranthambore. It is not. The terrain is rocky, uneven and deeply eroded, and it looks more like a village landscape than a jungle. Leopards live here quietly alongside the villagers. I also expected Jawai to be much larger than Ranthambore. It is not that either.
That mismatch was my biggest disappointment, and it is a personal one. If you want dense forest and thick undergrowth, Jawai will not give you that. If you are happy with a rocky, open landscape and a different kind of safari, it works.
Where is Jawai, and how big is it?
Jawai is in the Sumerpur tehsil of Pali district in Rajasthan, roughly midway between Udaipur and Jodhpur, around the Jawai Bandh reservoir. It is not a national park or a wildlife sanctuary. The area is protected as the Jawai Bandh Leopard Conservation Reserve, which was notified on 23 February 2010 under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, and a second notification on 15 June 2018 expanded the boundary to include more villages. The core reserve covers 19.79 sq km (Wikipedia). The wider landscape where safaris run, with its villages, hills and scrubland, spreads over about 60 sq km (Lonely Planet).
For comparison, Ranthambore National Park covers about 392 sq km (Wikipedia).
What is the landscape like in Jawai, and who lives here?
Jawai is a mix of rounded granite hills, boulder fields, farmland and dry rivers. The leopards shelter in natural caves and crevices in the rocks (Lonely Planet). Estimates put the number of leopards at 50 to 70, depending on the survey. They are Indian leopards (Panthera pardus fusca), listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, and they shelter in granite caves, not under tree cover.
The Rabari people live here. They are semi-nomadic herders in white robes and red turbans who graze sheep, goats and camels across these hills. Many of them regard the leopards as guardians of the land, and they have lived alongside them for generations (Lonely Planet). Many safari trackers come from Rabari families.
What do you need to know about Jawai Bandh?
Jawai Bandh is the dam the region is named after. It was built across the Jawai River, a tributary of the Luni, under Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur. Work began on 12 May 1946 and finished in 1957. The dam is 61.25 feet high, holds 7,887.5 million cubic feet, and is the largest in western Rajasthan. Its reservoir covers about 13 sq km, and the water irrigates roughly 102,315 acres across Pali and Jalore districts. Winter brings flamingos, demoiselle cranes and pelicans, and mugger crocodiles bask on the banks. A 2020 count put the number of crocodiles in the dam at 377 (Jawai Dam).
Which animals and birds live in Jawai?
- Leopards. The main draw, seen resting on rocks and in caves.
- Other mammals. Striped hyenas, jungle cats, sloth bears, nilgai, chinkara and Bengal foxes.
- Reptiles. Mugger crocodiles at the reservoir, plus Indian rock pythons and red sand boas. We saw crocodiles roaming in the dam on our evening safari.
- Birds. Indian eagle-owls year-round, and flamingos, demoiselle cranes and pelicans in winter.
How many safari zones are there in Jawai, and what is special about each?
Jawai has no fixed, numbered safari zones like a national park. The names below are the areas that operators use, there is no "best zone" with assured sightings, and your tracker chooses the route each day based on recent leopard movement (Safari Jawai). Nine areas are commonly listed, and Devgiri and the Jawai Dam area are used as well.
| Zone | What is special about it |
|---|---|
| Bera | The busiest and best-known area, with rocky hills, the most camps, and the highest vehicle traffic |
| Sena | Quieter, with rocky and grassy terrain and a village-side feel; sightings comparable to Bera with fewer vehicles |
| Jawai Dam area | Crocodiles, birdlife and sunset views around the reservoir |
| Kothar | Temples, water bodies and views of the dam |
| Jeewada | Quieter and less crowded |
| Devgiri | Rugged hills with temples built into them; some tracks are harder to use in some seasons |
| Rughnathpura | Near the river, good for crocodile and leopard in one trip |
| Varawal, Bisalpur, Tela, Terua | Less-used areas that are added to longer routes |
On my trip we covered Bera and the Jawai Dam area in the evening, and Sena, Maad and Jawai Bandh in the morning.
How does a Jawai safari work: morning vs evening?
Safaris here are run by private camps and local operators in open jeeps. A jeep takes up to six people, and a local tracker or guide goes with you. There is no forest-department ticket counter or fixed gate. You arrange it through your stay or a local operator.
My morning safari. The morning safari ran from 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM, and my stay arranged it for ₹3,000 a jeep. We covered the Sena zone, the Maad zone and Jawai Bandh. We saw a leopard cub and its mother sitting on top of a hill very far from us. We could only make them out with binoculars and our phone cameras.
My evening safari. The evening safari ran from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM. We arranged it through a reference from a friend’s friend. We had to travel about 13 to 14 km, around 30 minutes, to the meeting point where our guide joined us, so we left our tent at 4 PM. We covered Bera and the Jawai Dam area and did not see a leopard, but we did see crocodiles in the dam. The weather turned cool after about 5:30 PM, the sunset was lovely, and it started to get dark by 6:30 PM.
I preferred the evening safari. The cool breeze, the sunset and the light made it more enjoyable than the morning one, and a sighting at that hour would have made it even better.
These are the timings our operators gave us in October 2026: 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM in the morning and 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the evening.
How much does a Jawai safari cost?
Here is what I paid in October 2026, and what a local operator quoted me for a six-seat jeep:
| Option | Per jeep (up to 6 people) |
|---|---|
| Morning safari through my stay | ₹3,000 |
| Safari only (operator quote) | ₹4,000 |
| Safari with high-tea at the jeep | ₹4,500 |
| Safari with a table and chairs for tea | ₹5,000 |
| Safari with a carpet set-up for tea (what I paid) | ₹6,500 |
Operators list plain safaris from ₹3,799 per private gypsy for up to six guests (Safari Jawai), ₹4,500 to ₹5,500 (ResortWealth), and ₹5,000 plus GST per ride (Jawai Bera Leopard Camp). The ₹6,500 I paid was higher because of the carpet-and-tea set-up. Prices change with the season and the operator, so ask before you book.
What was the high-tea at sunset in Jawai like?
This was the highlight of the trip. During the evening safari, our guide set up a carpet on a hill overlooking Jawai Bandh, with two or three decorative props. Tea was served in a kulhad (a clay cup) with some snacks. While we watched the sunset, he took photos and videos of us. If you are a couple, spending an hour like this is a great experience.
Are Jawai safaris regulated? What I experienced
In my experience, the safaris at Jawai felt unregulated. There was no forest-department gate or ticket counter, and the rules I could see were not being followed by many of the jeeps around us.
Jawai is not a notified wildlife sanctuary or national park. In March 2026 the Rajasthan High Court noted that the region “continues to remain outside the protective framework” of a sanctuary or national park (Indian Express). The state’s own submission to the court described safari operations as unregulated, with unregistered gypsies, drivers and guides and no fixed routes or entry and exit points (court order).
Since then the rules have tightened:
- March 2026. The court ordered that no safari or wildlife-spotting activity may happen beyond 6 AM to 7 PM, and banned torch lights, searchlights, spotlights and drones (Times of India).
- May 2026. The Forest Department drafted a safari SOP with vehicle registration, compulsory GPS tracking and a minimum distance of 30 metres from leopard caves (Times of India).
- 5 September 2026. The court made the framework final, with a one-kilometre construction-control zone around identified leopard habitat. Night safaris, baiting, artificial lighting, drones and crowding of vehicles near caves are prohibited, and vehicles must be registered and GPS-enabled (ThePrint).
I visited about a month after that judgment. This is what I saw and was told:
- On the morning safari I estimated more than 50 jeeps at one spot where our guide said a leopard had been sighted a few moments earlier. The jeeps were only about 20 metres from the hill.
- People got out of their jeeps there. That is not allowed in Ranthambore, and nothing stopped it here.
- In my experience nothing controlled smoking near the hills either.
- Our safari operators told us that late-night safaris are available if you pay a little extra, and that camping in the forest, with cooking, can be arranged for a little more.
- I saw guides using powerful spotlights to look for leopards after dark.
Operators' own guidance says never to leave the vehicle near wildlife or enter a cave (Safari Jawai). Night safaris, spotlights and drones are banned by the High Court. I did not go on a night safari or camp in the forest. I cannot tell you who follows the rules and who does not. I can only describe what I experienced. Safari numbers keep rising, and I think an accident or an animal disturbance is a real risk to both visitors and wildlife.
Where did I stay in Jawai, and what did it cost?
We stayed in a tent at Jawai Vilas, near Rotela Lake in the Mori Bera area. The property has only five tents. We arrived on 2 October and were given a welcome drink, and we left around noon on 3 October.
| Item | What I paid |
|---|---|
| Tent, per night | ₹5,500, including breakfast and dinner |
| Laal Maas, a spicy red meat curry, made on request | ₹1,000 to ₹1,100 extra |
| Morning safari jeep | ₹3,000 |
The food was superb. The Laal Maas was the best dish of the trip. It tasted authentic, and the vegetarian dishes were good too. The kitchen can prepare something outside the regular dinner menu for a little extra, because they have to buy the ingredients.
One night was enough for me, especially if you have seen a leopard. If you want to enjoy it more, I would stay two days at most. Rates change, so ask the property manager before you book.

How do you reach Jawai?
I drove my own car from Jaipur. It is about 400 km, and the drive is around 7 hours without stops. We left home at 5:30 AM and reached our tent around 1:15 to 1:30 PM, which took us 8 hours. We took the Beawar to Pindwara road and paid about ₹500 to ₹550 across 5 toll plazas. Use Google Maps for your exact route and the day’s traffic.
| From | Road distance | Route |
|---|---|---|
| Udaipur | About 135 km | Via Gogunda, Pindwara and Nana |
| Jodhpur | About 160 km | Via Pali and Sumerpur |
| Ahmedabad | About 280 km | By road or train; see the next table |
| Jaipur | About 395 km | Via Kishangarh, Ajmer, Beawar, Sojat, Pali and Sumerpur, or the Beawar to Pindwara road I took |
| Delhi | About 715 km | Fly or take a train to Jodhpur or Udaipur, then drive |
Distances are approximate road distances. Mount Abu is about 90 km away on the Udaipur side, Ranakpur Jain Temple about 60 km, and Kumbhalgarh Fort about 85 to 90 km. Sumerpur is the nearest town, about 23 km away. Other bases are Bera, Sena and Jawai Bandh village. I covered Kumbhalgarh in my Kumbhalgarh Fort guide.

What are the bus, train and cab options from Udaipur, Jodhpur and Ahmedabad?
The nearest railway stations are Mori Bera (3.8 km), Sumerpur Jawai Bandh (15.6 km), Nana (11.3 km) and Falna (32 km). The nearest airports are Udaipur (about 150 km) and Jodhpur (about 170 km).
| From | By train | By bus | By cab |
|---|---|---|---|
| Udaipur | No direct train to Falna, so the road is the practical route (Jawai Safari) | No direct bus to Sumerpur. RSRTC buses go via Beawar and Shivganj, about 10 hours 13 minutes, ₹428 to ₹1,011 (Rome2rio) | Taxi to Sumerpur: 133 km, about 2 hours 11 minutes, ₹2,700 to ₹3,300 (Rome2rio). Camps quote a private transfer from about ₹5,000 (Jawai Safari) |
| Jodhpur | Trains from Jodhpur Jn to Falna run about every 4 hours, around 2 hours 53 minutes, sleeper ₹170 to ₹200 and 3A ₹460 to ₹600 (Rome2rio). Examples: 14707 Ranakpur Express (Jodhpur 14:10, Falna 17:15) and 12479 Suryanagari Express (Jodhpur 19:40, Falna 22:33) (Jawai Safari). Confirm on IRCTC | RSRTC bus from Jodhpur to Pali, then Pali to Shivganj, about 4 hours 37 minutes, ₹186 to ₹405 (Rome2rio) | Taxi: 143 km, about 2 hours 5 minutes, ₹2,900 to ₹3,600 to Sumerpur (Rome2rio) |
| Ahmedabad | Train 11090 from Ahmedabad Jn to Sumerpur Jawai Bandh runs 4 times a day, about 5 hours 7 minutes, sleeper ₹200 to ₹240 and 3A ₹500 to ₹700 (Rome2rio) | Night bus (Ashok Travels) from Shahibaug to Sirohi, twice a day, about 7 hours, then a taxi (Rome2rio) | Taxi: 291 km, about 4 hours 33 minutes, ₹5,500 to ₹7,000 (Rome2rio) |
The fares above are to Sumerpur, about 23 km from Jawai, so add a short taxi ride. Tell your stay which train you are on, because most camps send a pick-up to Falna or Jawai Bandh station.
What is the best time to visit Jawai for leopard spotting?
October to March is the comfortable season, and November to February is the busiest. I went in early October. The evenings were cool after about 5:30 PM, and the mornings started to warm up after 7:30 AM. In summer, leopards tend to stay near water, which can make them easier to find, but the heat is intense (ResortWealth). The monsoon turns the hills green. Whatever the month, a leopard sighting is never guaranteed.
Winter weekends and long weekends fill up quickly, and prices go up. Ask your stay about availability before you plan.
Is Jawai good for wildlife photography compared to Ranthambore?
They are very different. Jawai has open granite rock, so a leopard resting on a boulder can be visible from a distance in good light. The jeeps also have more freedom to follow tracks across farmland and hills, since there is no fixed route like in a national park. That is good for landscapes, sunsets and the Rabari villages.
Ranthambore is a much larger forest with tigers, fixed zones and strict timings. Photographers who want a tiger should choose Ranthambore. Photographers who want leopards on rocks, wide landscapes and village life should choose Jawai.
From my own trip, the leopard I saw was very far away. I used only my phone, and our guide carried the binoculars that we used to see it. A long lens would help. Crowds of jeeps at a spot can also make it harder to get a clean frame.
What are some offbeat things to do in Jawai apart from safaris?
- Kala Pahad. A granite hill with a steep 30-minute hike and wide views over Jawai Dam. Vehicles can also drive visitors to the top (Lonely Planet).
- Rabari village visit. Many stays arrange a walk through a Rabari village. Go as a guest and ask your stay about community partnerships.
- Hill temples. The Devgiri Temple and the Kambeshwar Mahadev Temple are cave-style shrines in the granite hills (Safari Jawai).
- Birdwatching and crocodile spotting at Jawai Bandh. Early mornings are the best time.
- Stargazing. The skies are dark, with very little light pollution.
- Day trips. Ranakpur Jain Temple and Kumbhalgarh Fort.
Is Jawai senior citizen friendly?
It can be, with some planning. The jeeps are open, the tracks are rocky and steep, and the ride is bumpy and dusty. Our driver took the jeep up and down very steep rocky slopes. The tents are comfortable but remote, and the days start early. I would not take my parents on a safari, but they could relax at the resort or hotel. Open vehicles and uneven tracks may not suit everyone, so tell your stay about any mobility needs before booking (Safari Jawai). If they do go, ask your stay for a gentler route and a sunset drive rather than an early morning one, and skip the hike up Kala Pahad, since a vehicle can drive visitors to the top.
Is Jawai famous for luxury stays?
Yes. Jawai is known for its luxury camps, and it drew attention when celebrities started visiting. Actors Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt celebrated a birthday at Sujan Jawai Camp in 2021 (Hindustan Times), and Vicky Kaushal and Katrina Kaif were reported to be heading to Jawai for New Year 2023 (News18). I think that publicity is a big reason Jawai is hyped.
Was it worth the price for me? If you want a quiet staycation, a bumpy ride on steep hills, and a different mix of village and forest, it is a good one-to-two-day trip. If you expect a dense forest like Ranthambore, leave that expectation at home. For a wider trip, see my top places to visit in Rajasthan and the 3-day Rajasthan itinerary.
Which hotels, camps and resorts can you stay at?
I stayed at only one place, so the others below are researched, not visited. The rates are what Trip.com India and the properties' own websites showed on 16 October 2026 for one night. They change by date and rise around Diwali and New Year. Guest ratings are out of 10 on Trip.com. Please check the prices before you book one for yourself.

What would I do differently?
The next time I visit Jawai, I would love to go with my friends and stay for two or three days, preferably during the off-season or the rainy season, when the area is greener and there is plenty of water in the dam. I would also like to go on a night safari, camp in the forest, cook our own food, hike to Kala Pahad, and try some other adventurous activities.
Frequently Asked Questions
