Ranthambore Safari Booking 2026: Official Website, Zones, Gypsy vs Canter Price, Timings and Step-by-Step Guide

Ranthambore Safari Booking 2026: Official Website, Zones, Gypsy vs Canter Price, Timings and Step-by-Step Guide

Quick answer: To book a Ranthambore safari, use only the Rajasthan Forest Department portal at forestrajasthan.com. Pick a date and shift, choose a gypsy (6 seats) or a canter (20 seats) and a zone, add ID details, pay online and receive your tickets on WhatsApp. Advance bookings for October to December open on 1 August; tatkal opens seven days ahead.

Key Takeaways

  • Book only on the official portal. Advance quotas open on 1 August (October to December), 1 November (January to March) and 1 February (April to June), at 12 noon. Tatkal opens 7 days ahead and premium tatkal 3 days ahead.
  • Full payment is needed at booking, a guide is compulsory and is included in the price, and a gypsy takes 6 people while a canter takes 20.
  • Tickets are valid only for the printed date and time, late arrivals are not allowed, and you must carry the same original ID you booked with.
  • Refunds are 75% if you cancel 30 or more days ahead, 50% between 3 and 30 days, and nothing within 3 days. Tatkal bookings are non-refundable.
  • Zone 3 sold out online for my dates. Book early, and book more than one drive, because one drive can’t be relied on to show you a tiger.

How do you book a Ranthambore safari in five steps?

I did not book through the portal on this trip, because the zone I wanted was already full. This is how the portal works.

  1. Pick the date and the shift. Open forestrajasthan.com and click “Book Safari”. A pop-up asks you to verify your location. The calendar shows how many bookings are already made for each date. Choose the morning or the afternoon shift.
  2. Choose the vehicle, the zone and the booking type. Pick a gypsy or a canter, then a zone from those still available, then the booking type: advance, current, tatkal or premium tatkal.
  3. Enter the visitor details. Click pay, tick that you agree to the instructions, and solve the small calculation check (a sum like 4 plus 5). Then fill in name, gender, age, tourist type (Indian or foreigner), ID type and ID number, and upload your ID. Foreign visitors also add their country and passport details. Do not use autofill, browser extensions or copy-paste tools: the portal says they are prohibited and a booking made with them can be cancelled without a refund.
  4. Pay. Enter your mobile number, confirm the OTP sent on WhatsApp, and pay by UPI, a card, net banking or an international card.
  5. Get your tickets. They arrive on WhatsApp. Carry the original ID you used for the booking.

Book only at booking.forestrajasthan.com, as the portal itself advises (forestrajasthan.com).

Source: forestrajasthan.com. The portal’s FAQ and terms add that online bookings can typically be made up to 90 days in advance, so check the calendar for your own date. Tickets are issued first come, first served, and availability is not guaranteed. The park is open from October to June. Safaris sell out at weekends, on holidays and in peak season, so set a reminder for the day your quota opens.

What ID do you need for a Ranthambore safari?

Indian visitors upload a clear copy of their Aadhaar card. Foreign visitors enter their full passport number. At the gate, you must carry the same original ID, or a DigiLocker ID, that you submitted during booking. If the ID does not match, the permit is treated as fake and cancelled (forestrajasthan.com). The first visitor whose ID was uploaded must be present on the day. If the name on your booking differs from the name on your ID, the system shows a warning and the booking only goes through once it is corrected (Times of India).

The terms also ask you to reach the Forest Permit Booking Counter at least 45 minutes before your entry time, and to bring two copies of the confirmation slip, one to deposit and one to carry. Your guide and vehicle details are allocated about 2 hours before the visit, and the portal gives a link to check them.

How much does a Ranthambore safari cost?

The portal says the price depends on the vehicle (gypsy or canter), the visitor’s nationality, the selected zone, government fees and applicable taxes (forestrajasthan.com). These are the fees I checked myself on the portal in October 2026. Always read the live price on the payment page, because it changes with the zone, the booking type and the season.

OptionFee shown on the portal
Gypsy for 6 people, Indian, normal booking₹23,191.09
Gypsy for 6 people, Indian, base price (tatkal adds ₹5,286)₹17,684.04
Gypsy for 6 people, foreigner, normal booking₹26,162
Canter seat, Indian₹991.07 per passenger (₹355 canter, ₹631.63 guide fee, plus a 1.06% convenience fee and GST)
Canter seat, foreigner₹2,421.73 per passenger (₹1,768 canter, ₹631.63 guide fee, plus fees)
Canter seat, Indian student₹839.19 per passenger (₹205 canter, ₹631.63 guide fee, plus fees)

Gypsy or canter?

A gypsy is for people who want their own space. It seats six and is fast, quiet and agile, and with your own group you can stop to take a photo or just enjoy the forest. A canter is an open 20-seater, so you share it with up to 19 other people plus a driver and a forest guide. It costs less and is far easier to get a seat in. For photography and a quiet drive, I would pick a gypsy.

What are the 10 zones of Ranthambore, and how do they differ?

The reserve has ten zones. Zones 1 to 5 are the core zones, and Zones 6 to 10 are the buffer zones. The portal lets you choose from the zones that are still available for your date and vehicle (forestrajasthan.com). No zone guarantees a tiger. Tiger territories change from season to season, so ask your hotel or guide which zones have been productive recently.

ZoneTypeKey points (official)RouteWhat sets it apart
1CoreSinghdwar, Raipur, Sultanpur, Kalapan20 kmStarts at the Singh Dwar side near the fort
2CoreJogimahal, Jhalra, Kamaldha, Gandhria20 kmWooded valleys; reported for leopards and sloth bears as well as tigers
3CoreJogimahal, Padam Talab, Rajbagh18 kmThree lakes (Padam Talab, Rajbagh and Malik Talab), stone ruins and the fort as a backdrop; the most popular zone and the hardest to book
4CoreLakarda, Berda, Adidant27 kmThe longest core route; often named for frequent tiger sightings
5CoreJokha, Kachida, Bagdah, Bakola18 kmCore habitat with less published detail
6BufferKundal, Mansarovar, Guda27 kmThe Kundal area has produced regular sightings
7BufferChidikho, Kushalidarra12 kmThe shortest route
8BufferBalas, Kalibhat, Mahakho16 kmEasier to book
9BufferQualji, Ghati ka Tiraha, Pandu Kho22 kmQuieter, with fewer vehicles
10BufferHalonda, Kailashpuri, Devpura20 kmQuieter, with fewer vehicles

The core zones are described as having the highest tiger density and being the hardest to book, while the buffer zones are easier to book and have fewer vehicles. Sighting rankings are estimates, because no official zone-by-zone figures are published.

I went in Zone 3. It is the one most visitors want, and on my dates it was already full online. On our drive we also saw Jogi Mahal, a giant banyan tree and Malik Talab. Ranthambore Fort, the backdrop of Zone 3, is one of the hill forts in my guide to forts in Rajasthan.

What are the Ranthambore safari timings in each month?

Source: forestrajasthan.com. On 18 October 2026, my morning safari ran from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM.

PeriodMorning safariAfternoon safari
1 October to 31 October6:30 AM to 10:00 AM2:30 PM to 6:00 PM
1 November to 31 January7:00 AM to 10:30 AM2:00 PM to 5:30 PM
1 February to 31 March6:30 AM to 10:00 AM2:30 PM to 6:00 PM

17 May to 30 June6:00 AM to 9:30 AM3:30 PM to 7:00 PM

Reach the permit counter at least 45 minutes before your slot. Our gypsy picked us up from the hotel at 5:30 AM for the 6:30 start. We stopped at two checkpoints, one on the Ranthambore Fort road and one at Singh Dwar Gate, and waited about 5 minutes at each. Late arrivals are not allowed.

The park closes in the monsoon, and core zones may close from July to September.

Should you book on the portal, through an agent or through your hotel?

OptionWhat it means
The official portalThe government price with no agency fee. The portal itself says to book only on its own site, booking.forestrajasthan.com. You have to be quick when your quota opens
An agent or tour operatorConvenient if you want help, but agencies add their own fees on top of the government fee. The portal says bookings made through agents must follow its official policies, and non-compliance can lead to cancellation without a refund. Agents must declare their status
Your hotel or resortMany hotels arrange safaris for guests and can tell you which zones have been productive. Ask whether they charge extra
A personal contactThis is what I did when Zone 3 was full, and I would not tell anyone to rely on it

On my trip, I paid ₹15,000 for the whole jeep, for three of us, and I paid it to the person who arranged it, not through the portal. That is not the portal price. The tickets arrived on WhatsApp from the forest department with the driver’s and guide’s contact details. If a zone you want is full, check the portal again for cancellations. Permits from partial cancellations are released in the premium tatkal quota at 10 AM.

What are the cancellation and change rules?

Source: forestrajasthan.com. The policy can be updated without notice, so read the live page.

SituationWhat the portal says
Cancelled 30 or more days before the visit75% refund
Cancelled between 3 days and 30 days before the visit50% refund
Cancelled within 3 days of the visitNo refund
Confirmed tatkal and premium tatkal bookingsNo cancellation refund and not transferable
Cancelling one passenger from a ticket (partial cancellation)No refund, and the seat goes to the premium tatkal quota at 10 AM; once cancelled, it cannot be restored

Safari cancelled, postponed or moved to another zone because of weather, animal movement or emergenciesNo refund
Payment taken but no ticket issuedContact booking@forestrajasthan.com within 48 hours; the refund excludes bank payment charges and comes within three business days

The pages differ by a day on the 30-day boundary, so do not leave a cancellation to the last minute. Permits cannot be exchanged or modified, and there is no exchange or refund for lost, stolen or damaged tickets. The management can also change your allotted zone or close a zone to protect wildlife.

What rules apply inside the park, and what should you carry?

The booking instructions you must accept before you pay are (forestrajasthan.com):

  • Tickets are valid only for the date and time printed, and late arrivals are not allowed.
  • Carry the same ID you booked with.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions at all times.
  • Feeding animals is prohibited.
  • Use dustbins only. Littering and plastic are banned.
  • Smoking and alcohol are strictly prohibited. Alcohol and non-vegetarian food are prohibited inside the reserve.
  • No pets, firearms or unregistered vehicles.
  • Mobile phone use within the tourism zones of the core habitat is not permitted.
  • Violators are penalised under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

The rules I saw enforced were to stay seated in the vehicle, not to litter, to keep silent when the big cat is spotted, and not to feed any animal, including langurs and deer. I did not see anyone break them.

I carried my Aadhaar card and a water bottle. Our guide advised wearing colours that blend into the forest, because bright neon, red, yellow and white stand out to animals. You cannot buy anything inside the park, and there are no washrooms past the forest gate, so use the washroom before you leave. In October, a morning in an open gypsy is cold, roughly 16 to 18 degrees. I wore a half-sleeve T-shirt and felt it, so bring at least a thin sweatshirt.

What would I do differently?

I would book more than one drive, in different zones, and not rely on a single safari. We saw a tiger on our first drive in Zone 3, but not everyone is that lucky, and I met a couple at breakfast who had come back from Zone 7 without seeing one. In a two-night stay, I would book at least two morning safaris and one evening safari, so you can relax and give yourself more chances. I tell the full story of my morning in Zone 3, and what a realistic sighting looks like, in my Ranthambore National Park trip guide. If you are comparing safaris, my Jawai leopard safari guide covers a very different, private-operator safari, and for a wider trip see my top places to visit in Rajasthan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book a Ranthambore safari?

Book only on the official portal, forestrajasthan.com. Pick a date and shift, choose a vehicle and a zone, enter the visitor details and ID, pay online, and receive your tickets on WhatsApp.

forestrajasthan.com is the Rajasthan Forest Department's information portal, and bookings are made at booking.forestrajasthan.com. The portal says to book only on its own site.

Advance bookings for October to December open on 1 August, for January to March on 1 November, and for April to June on 1 February, all at 12 noon. Tatkal opens 7 days ahead at 11 AM, premium tatkal 3 days ahead, and current bookings daily at 10 AM.

It depends on the vehicle, nationality, zone and booking type. The portal fees I checked were ₹991.07 per canter seat for Indians and ₹23,191.09 for a full gypsy. Always read the live price on the payment page.

A gypsy is a 6-seater open jeep, private and flexible, good for photography. A canter is a 20-seater open bus, shared and cheaper.

Ten. Zones 1 to 5 are core zones and Zones 6 to 10 are buffer zones. Zone 3, around Padam Talab and Rajbagh, is the most popular.

No zone guarantees a tiger. Zone 3 is the most popular, and Zones 2, 4 and 6 are often named for sightings. Ask your hotel which zones have been productive lately.

In October, the morning safari runs from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM and the afternoon safari from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM. From November to January it is 7:00 to 10:30 AM and 2:00 to 5:30 PM. February and March match October, April to 16 May is 6:00 to 9:30 AM and 3:00 to 6:30 PM, and 17 May to 30 June is 6:00 to 9:30 AM and 3:30 to 7:00 PM.

The official pages I read do not list a weekly closed day, and tour-operator pages disagree on whether it is a Tuesday or a Wednesday. Check the portal's calendar before you plan. Core zones may close from July to September.

You get 75% back if you cancel 30 or more days ahead, 50% between 3 and 30 days, and nothing within 3 days. Confirmed tatkal bookings are non-refundable and non-transferable, and permits cannot be modified. There is no refund when a safari is cancelled for weather or moved to another zone.

Indians upload an Aadhaar copy, foreigners enter a passport number, and everyone carries the same original ID or a DigiLocker ID to the gate. If the ID does not match, the permit is cancelled.

Yes. Children under 5 do not need a ticket. If you want a separate seat for a young child, add a seat and enter the age as 5y at checkout. An open vehicle is cold in the early morning, so dress young children warmly.

You can, but agencies add their own fees on top of the government fee, and the portal can cancel a booking without a refund if the rules are not followed. Compare the quote with the portal price.

Yes. Every safari vehicle must have a trained naturalist guide, and the guide fee is included in the price. You can request a specific guide for an additional fee.

The booking instructions say mobile phone use within the tourism zones of the core habitat is not permitted. Read the live instructions before you carry or use one.

At least two or three, in different zones, because a single drive can't be relied on to show you a tiger.
